Energizing the streetcar
Consumer's Energy announced that the City of Grand Rapids passed a resolution last Tuesday to purchase 20 percent of its power supply from Michigan based renewable energy sources. This announcement makes Grand Rapids the largest participant in Consumer's Green Generation program. The enrollment is reported to be cost neutral for the city.
Add this to another milestone in Grand Rapids' renewable energy history. The most noteable occurring on July 24, 1880 when Grand Rapids was first in the country to demonstrate electricity from hydro power. The demonstration event lit up 16 lamps in a Grand Rapids' neighborhood.
The decision by Grand Rapids suggests an interesting idea for the environment and transit. Why not utilize renewable energy sources to electrify the proposed downtown streetcar loop? Or, better yet, why not electrify the future south side BRT route?
